Background of the Nobel Prize

The Nobel Prize was set up when businessman and entrepreneur Alfred Nobel, famously known for invention of Dynamite, died and left
the majority of his fortune to the establishment of prizes in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and peace. His will
stated that the prizes should be awarded to “those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit to
humankind.” In 1968, Sweden’s central bank established Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel.

* The Sweden – Korea Nobel Memorial Program 2024 is organized and conducted by the Swedish Embassy in Seoul
together with Partners in Korea and Sweden.
